The Empowering Communities through Sustainable Agriculture and Livelihoods Project implemented by Kandaakiat Organization for Women Empowerment and Development achieved significant progress in strengthening food security, economic resilience, and sustainable livelihoods among refugee and host community women and youth in Bweyale (Kiryandongo District) and Kampala. Through practical training and field demonstrations, 54 out of 60 targeted beneficiaries were equipped with climate-smart farming skills such as composting, crop rotation, and organic soil management. These activities enhanced knowledge and strengthened the capacity of communities to practice environmentally sustainable agriculture.
The project also established 15 demonstration farms that served as learning hubs where participants applied sustainable farming techniques. Through these demonstration plots and continuous mentorship, beneficiaries increased agricultural productivity and adopted improved farming practices. As a result, household food security improved significantly, with 85% of participating households reporting access to three meals per day and increased agricultural output.
In addition, the project promoted collective farming models that strengthened social cohesion and cooperation among participants. Two active farming groups cultivated 13 hectares of land and shared agricultural tools, resources, and knowledge. This group-based approach fostered collaboration, improved trust among community members, and encouraged inclusive participation in decision-making, particularly among women and youth.
