Kandaakiat Organization successfully strengthened food security and economic empowerment through its Urban Farming initiative, focusing on mushroom cultivation among refugees and host community members. Between January and December 2025, 167 participants benefited from comprehensive technical support and capacity-building modules, including post-harvest handling, hygiene and contamination prevention, nutrition integration, business development, cooperative management, and value addition. These interventions not only enhanced agricultural skills but also promoted safe, nutritious food practices and small-scale agribusiness opportunities, particularly empowering women to diversify income sources and improve household food security.
As part of the initiative, mushroom gardens and essential production materials were distributed to multiple beneficiary groups, followed by sustained mentoring, monitoring, and technical guidance. A highlight of the year was the Mushroom Value Addition Training at Makerere University, attended by 27 participants, which emphasized product quality, preservation, and marketability. Participants produced a range of value-added mushroom products, including cookies, wine, bread, and cake. Through these efforts, participants transitioned from subsistence-level production to small-scale mushroom enterprises, fostering resilient livelihoods, improved nutrition, and sustainable food systems in urban and peri-urban communities.
